Black and Brown youth sent a message to Donald Trump, Betsy DeVos, and the Commission on School Safety calling on them to listen to youth of color as they made recommendations about school safety. Instead, the Commission turned its back on young people’s civil rights, provided a blueprint for adding more guns to schools, and entrenched the school-to-prison pipeline by encouraging the militarization and “hardening” of schools with military personnel, police, metal detectors, and surveillance equipment. These measures will make schools in Black and Brown communities more like jails than they already are.
