Tell Governor Kotek to reject the Prosperity Council’s proposals to cut taxes on the rich and corporations

If a group advising Governor Tina Kotek gets its way, Oregon will be making drastic changes to the state’s tax system in a way that benefits the rich and corporations — to the detriment of working Oregonians.

Tell Governor Kotek to reject the tax recommendations of the Prosperity Council.

Earlier this year, the Governor appointed a “Prosperity Council” to make recommendations on how to make Oregon more “competitive.” Nearly all of the appointees to this council hail from the corporate sector.

A document leaked earlier this week makes it clear that the Governor’s Prosperity Council is doing the bidding of corporations and the wealthy, not hardworking Oregonians straining under the affordability crisis. The draft document shows that the council may recommend:

  • Reinstating a tax break for wealthy investors eliminated by the legislature earlier this year. Nearly all of the tax benefits go to people making over $1 million in a year.

  • Changes to the Corporate Activities Tax, which funds K-12 schools and preschool.

  • Changes to the estate tax, the only mechanism Oregon has for taxing extreme wealth.

If the Governor goes along with this corporate wish list, either our schools and other essential services would face deep cuts, or taxes would need to go up for working families to make up the difference, or both.

Tell the Governor: No tax cuts for the rich and corporations. Reject the Prosperity Council’s wish list.

We are living at a time of unprecedented concentration of wealth and income in the hands of the rich. That extreme inequality is due in part to decades of tax cuts for the rich and corporations at both the federal and state level.

We are in the midst of an affordability crisis that’s hitting many families extremely hard. While we work hard to take care of our families, our productivity is siphoned away by the rich, leaving us unable to afford the American Dream.

We are dealing with the consequences of trillions of dollars worth of tax cuts for the rich and corporations, courtesy of the Trump administration.

We are more than four decades into the failure that is trickle-down economics, the lie that cutting taxes on the rich and corporations creates prosperity for everyone.

The Prosperity Council wants to continue going down that failed path. But enough is enough.

Send Governor Kotek a clear message: reject the Prosperity Council’s warmed over trickle-down strategies.
