Tell Governor Shapiro to Veto Carbon Capture & Storage Bill SB 831
Friends,
Last Thursday night, Senator Yaw's carbon capture and storage bill was rushed though the House Appropriations committee. When it went to the floor for a vote, legislator after legislator spoke out in opposition to the bill including Reps. Vitali and Causer, the Majority and Minority chairs of the House Environmental Resources and Energy Committee. The bill never went to them. It never had a hearing. There was no discussion in the committees, Consumer Protection and Appropriations, that voted on it. Nevertheless, SB 831 passed in the House. It raced to the Senate for concurrence with the amendments (that did nothing to improve the bill and made it worse, in at least one case). It passed easily and was sent to the Governor's desk that night.
Governor Shapiro hasn't signed it yet, so we're asking you to tell him he should veto SB 831 instead.
It is an enormously consequential bill that undoes any of the good things that passed with the budget, like Solar for Schools. Carbon Capture and Storage has never worked, but it is being promoted as a way of managing CO2 waste. In Pennsylvania, it's also the technology that turns gray hydrogen into blue hydrogen.
Those are just some of the reasons SB 831 should not be enacted. You can find more of them here. https://www.betterpathcoalition.org/no-carbon-capture-storage
Please tell Governor Shapiro that the way to protect the people and the planet is to veto SB 831.
Appreciatively,
Karen
