Tell Legislators to Stop the State Takeover of Ohio Public Education

Tell the Senate to STOP Senate Bill 178, a State Takeover of Ohio's Education System!

Email SB 178 sponsor Senator Bill Reineke and all of Ohio's Senators to demand they stop this politically-motivated takeover in its tracks.

In May 2021, Senator Bill Reineke (R-Tiffin) introduced SB178, “to reform the function and responsibilities of state education offices.” There were no hearings or interest in moving the bill until November, after Ohio voters elected three State Board members who reject extremism and prioritize the safety and wellbeing of all students.

In response, Senator Reineke and fellow lawmakers are using lame duck to fast-track SB 178 in hopes of reducing the role and authority of the State Board of Education and radically changing the face of public education across Ohio.

This bill would shift management and oversight of public education from the State Board of Education to the governor’s office and dramatically reduce the power and authority of the State Board. This blatant power grab infuses partisan politics into public education and removes the ability of families, voters, and taxpayers from having any real input into what education looks like in their communities.

There is no place for partisan politics in public education or centralizing control of education in a cabinet-level agency. We know that Ohio students are best served when families work with trained educators and caring board members to determine the face of education in the classroom.

It’s time elected leaders stopped prioritizing their own political agendas and put Ohio kids at the head of the class!

Tell the Senate to STOP SB178. Our kids' futures are at stake.
