Tell Seattle City Council to Stop Funding the Woodland Park Zoo with Our Taxes!

Please send an email to the Seattle City Council today asking to defund the zoo!

Since 2002, Seattle tax payers have given the Woodland Park Zoo $150,400,000!
In 2019, Seattle tax payers gave the zoo $11,588,416 and King County gave the zoo $5 million. Woodland Park Zoo is a private entity that imprisons animals. NARN believes that no city money should be going to pay for animals to live in jail. We believe these funds are better spent elsewhere, and we do no want any more of our tax dollars going to the to the zoo.

Please take a moment to send a note to Seattle City Council to ask them to re-allocate public funds away from the Woodland Park Zoo.

Here's some talking points for your letter:

  • Since gate attendance to Woodland Park Zoo has been going down for over a decade, funding should go down as well until the zoo supports itself.
  • No scientific, evidence based study has ever shown that any significant learning takes place at a zoo. It is primarily an entertainment venue and it should not be given our hard earned tax dollars.
  • There are much greater priorities for our tax dollars than funding Woodland Park Zoo. Please gradually defund it.
  • Woodland Park Zoo is a private organization. Let it be self sustaining and stop giving tax payer handouts. Please reduce funding in this budget and all subsequent budgets.

    Please take action today!
