Tell the Milwaukee County Board to Vote to Remove the Estabrook Dam

In September 2016, the Milwaukee County Finance and Audit Committee completely avoided voting on a resolution to remove the Estabrook Dam (put forth by the Milwaukee County Director of Parks, John Dargle).

In the face of a massive cost overrun before dam repair has even started, your Milwaukee County Finance and Audit Committee chose to ignore expert opinion and the voices of more than 1,500 Milwaukee County residents in refusing to take action to remove the Estabrook Dam.

This was a huge opportunity.

  • It was an opportunity to rightfully change course on a decision that will negatively impact all Milwaukee County residents.
  • It was an opportunity for Supervisors, who have been forced to vote on this issue in conjunction with unrelated "must pass" budget packages, to truly represent their constituents’ best interests.
  • It was an opportunity for new Supervisors to learn and ask questions of experts about an issue where misinformation has been spread and facts obscured.

And your Milwaukee County Finance and Audit Committee wasted it.

Milwaukee Riverkeeper is disappointed with the supervisors’ unwillingness to act not only in the best interest of their constituents, but also for the health of the Milwaukee River. Unfortunately, there is still no commitment from the Milwaukee County Board to hold a clean “up and down” vote on this policy. Instead, it is likely that increased funding for repair will be inserted into the next budget.

When an issue like this has dragged on for so many years, when a court order is involved, and thousands of County residents have made their voices heard, we feel strongly the public deserves to have every single one of their elected County officials go on the record letting their constituents know where they stand.

WE'RE NOT GIVING UP: Tell your Milwaukee County Supervisors to hold a clean, fair vote on removing the Estabrook Dam.  (WRITE YOUR SUPERVISORS TODAY -->)

P.S. The good news is Supervisors Sheldon Wasserman and Jason Haas voted against the delaying the vote on the Parks Department's resolution. Tell them thanks! Supervisors Peggy West, Michael Mayo Sr., Willie Johnson Jr., Supreme Moore Omokunde, and Sequanna Taylor all voted to effectively bury the resolution.

Supervisors David Sartori and Deanna Alexander, while not on the Finance and Audit Committee, have been strong supporters of removing the Estabrook Dam - please thank them as well!
