The Mexican gray wolf is facing a silent threat that could lead to their extinction if we don’t do something about it first. The genetic diversity of this population is drastically below what these wolves need to give birth to and raise healthy pups. The US Fish and Wildlife Service could ease this deadly crisis by releasing more Mexican gray wolves bred in captivity.
2018 was a record year for lobo mortality, with a total of 21 deaths. Wolves are continuing to die off, with no hope of being replaced by healthy, new pack members. Every time one of these wolves dies, their genes leave the gene pool, and the population degrades. Without rapid intervention, we could lose this species.
Ask the US Fish and Wildlife Service to release more wolves into the wild to increase the genetic diversity of the species!
