Tell Your Legislators: Vote NO on the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act!

The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act (S. 128) is an amendment to the National Voting Rights Act of 1993 (NVRA) and would require all Americans to prove their citizenship status by presenting documentary proof of citizenship (DPOC)—in person—when registering to vote or updating their voter registration information. Specifically, the legislation would require the vast majority of Americans to rely on a passport or birth certificate to prove their citizenship.

The Brennan Center for Justice estimates based on survey data that over 20 million American citizens do not have these documents readily on hand and could thus easily be disenfranchised under the bill. In addition, the SAVE Act would upend popular methods of voter registration like online voter registration, registration by mail, automatic voter registration, and third-party voter registration drives, because the bill requires DPOC to be provided in person to an election or other approved government official. This would impact everyone from naturalized citizens and Asian Americans to rural and working families and students.

The House version (H.R. 22) recently passed and the we must act before this disastrous bill is turned into law. Will you join us by contacting your senator and telling them to vote NO on S. 128?
