Tell Your Members of Congress to Oppose Block Grants and Cuts to Section 8
On May 30th, Trump released his 2026 budget request to Congress, proposing catastrophic cuts to housing and other vital social programs to pay for more tax cuts to billionaires!
The budget proposes to replace all federal rental housing with Block Grants to the States with 43% less funding; impose a 2 year limit on how long “able-bodied” tenants can stay in their homes; and eliminate Fair Housing enforcement. The $27 billion cut to HUD rental housing affects every form of housing assistance, including Project Based Section 8, Section 8 Vouchers, and Public Housing, and Elderly and Handicapped Housing, in addition to outright eliminating funding for Community Development Block Grants and Fair Housing enforcement.
Take Action NOW to oppose cuts to HUD Housing, Section 8, and other vital social programs!!
The Leaders and Organizers for Tenant Empowerment (LOFTE) Network calls on affiliates and allies to RESIST these proposals!
Urge Congress to reject cuts to social programs, to pay for tax cuts to the rich. Already, Congress shortchanged Section 8 by $700 million in the FY 2025 Continuing Resolution adopted in March, which could result in 32,000 fewer Vouchers by September 2025. These cuts are in addition to the $715 billion in 10 year cuts to Medicaid and $295 billion to SNAP (Food Stamps) already passed by the House, to pay for $5.5 trillion in extended tax cuts for the rich.
Focus your outreach on moderate Republicans and encourage Democrats to stay united against the cuts!
