Tell your MP to back our Public Power Now campaign
Around the world, while energy prices soar and climate change accelerates, inequality continues to widen. Here in the UK, the privatised energy sector is at the heart of these crises. While millions are struggling to pay their bills, choosing between heating and eating, privatised energy companies are turning record profits and raking in billions.
However, they’ve not only driven millions of people into fuel poverty. Behind the scenes, these companies have been funding and driving climate change denial propaganda. For decades, they’ve spent billions lobbying successive governments to delay efforts to decarbonise, while continuing to licence new oil and gas fields.
We need to decarbonise our economy and keep bills down. However, we can’t trust privatised fossil fuel companies to deliver the transformations necessary. They simply won’t do it while it’s profitable to continue extracting oil and gas.
It doesn’t have to be this way - we need Public Power Now!
From the point of view of the privatised energy companies, our energy system isn’t broken. It has been designed to work this way, to extract maximum profits to further enrich the wealthiest in society. As always, it’s the working class that is expected to foot the bill.
This has gone on long enough. It’s time to put power back in the hands of the public.
There is a genuine solution - a publicly owned and democratically controlled system that puts people before profit.
We can transform our energy network, from the highly centralised corporations of the past, to a truly democratic system where decisions are made as close as possible to those that are impacted. With maximum worker and citizen control, communities up and down the country will be empowered to use revenue to implement decarbonisation plans and diversify their economies.
Under full public ownership, state resources can be directed away from subsidising private profits, and towards renewable energy generation - rapidly decarbonising our economy and creating millions of good, green, unionised jobs as part of a just transition.
How can we get there?
It won’t be easy - some of the most powerful forces in society created our energy system to ensure that private profits are protected above all else. To take on these vested interests, we need to build the broadest and strongest possible coalition. This has to include a socialist Labour Party and an energised and militant trade union movement, working in concert with grassroots climate activists. Without this, we won’t win the changes we desperately need.
Support our campaign in calling for:
Full public ownership of the whole UK energy system
The establishment of a publicly owned power generation company that completely supplants the private market
Maximum democratic worker and citizen control of new and existing public energy authorities
Devolution of powers and funding to enable local authority owned renewable energy
Provision of energy near to the cost of production to ease the cost of living crisis
Prevention of the extraction of fossil fuel reserves at odds with climate science
Full decarbonisation of the energy and heat system by 2030
