Tell Your Rhode Island State Legislators: Tax the top 1 percent

The time to tax the top 1% is now!

The proposal below will raise more than $200 million a year for Rhode Island to invest in affordable childcare, affordable housing, public transportation, roads, and senior services.

Tell State Legislators to Pass Rep. Alzate's and Sen. Murray's HB-7313/SB-2238 which would:

  • Generate more than $200 million in annual revenue
  • Tax the top 1% of income earners in RI by creating a 3% surtax on income above $640,000 after all deductions ($772,000 in pre-tax income); this would not affect the first $772,000 in pre-tax income
  • Affect only 6,100 out of more than 500,000 tax filers — only 1% of all tax filers
  • Provide much-needed revenue for healthcare and essential services
  • Create no credible threat that high-income earners will leave the state
