Tell Your State Senators to End Qualified Immunity!

We are contacting members of the South Carolina Senate to ask for their support for S. 0334, the Transparency In Justice Act. Among other things, the bill would end qualified immunity, the doctrine which shields police officers from accountability for actions that may violate legal and moral guidelines.

In a statement from the ACLU “An officer who has violated the Constitution cannot be held liable for damages unless the violation was so “clearly established” in the law that any reasonable officer would have known that their actions were unlawful. This requirement is nowhere to be found in the Constitution or any federal statute.” Qualified immunity can be ended and it is past time for the action to be taken.

Police officers who commit violence against those they are meant to protect must be held accountable.
