Tell your TN state representative: Oppose expulsion of Reps. Jones, Johnson, and Pearson

When Tennesseans—led by students and young people—peacefully marched to the state Capitol to demand stronger gun laws following the mass shooting at Nashville’s Covenant School, Democratic Reps. Justin Jones, Gloria Johnson, and Justin Pearson joined us in solidarity.

Instead of passing legislation to protect our children and communities from gun violence, Republicans retaliated, stripping Jones, Johnson, and Pearson of their committee assignments and restricting their access to the legislative office building. Now, the GOP plans to expel them from the chamber.

Tennessee Republicans are outrageously equating the protest—where no one was injured or arrested, no property was damaged, and when activists entered the state Capitol, they did so by going through security—to the Jan. 6 insurrection.

Removing Jones, Johnson, and Pearson from the House is an unprecedented overreach that will deny more than 200,000 Tennesseans their voice in the legislature. As Rep. Johnson aptly highlighted, Republicans are quick to expel outspoken Democratic colleagues who represent Nashville, Knoxville, and Memphis, but they don't hold themselves to any standard of behavior at all.

“We had a child molester on the floor for years, they helped him get reelected and did nothing to expel him,” Johnson said. “We’ve had members pee in each other’s chairs. We’ve had members illegally prescribe drugs to their cousin-mistress, and nothing happened. But talk on the floor without permission, and you’ll get expelled.”

A final vote is planned for Thursday, April 6. Help demonstrate broad support for Jones, Johnson, and Pearson in advance of the vote, and denounce TN House Republicans for attempting to silence dissent by adding your name today.
