In 2023, Alabama became the first state to exempt overtime pay from state income tax, allowing workers to keep more of their earnings. This 5 percent tax exemption on overtime is set to expire in June 2025, threatening take-home pay for thousands, including Steelworkers. For many, overtime is essential, not optional. To protect workers’ pay, House Minority Leader Anthony Daniels has introduced HB 467, a bill to make the exemption permanent.
