Urge Your Legislators to Support MTA-Backed Legislation to Cancel the MCAS This Year!
Parents, educators and students agree: It’s time to cancel MCAS testing for this school year! High-stakes tests are always problematic, but they are especially damaging in the midst of a pandemic. This year, testing would divert precious time and energy needed for teaching and supporting students who are facing disruption and trauma.
The MTA is supporting legislation filed by Representative Jim Hawkins (D-Attleboro) and Senator Jo Comerford (D-Northampton) that would require the commissioner of elementary and secondary education to request a waiver of federal testing requirements from the U.S. Department of Education. Following the receipt of that waiver, the legislation would further require the Commonwealth to waive the MCAS testing requirement for all grades. Please email your legislators right away and urge them to support and co-sponsor the MTA-backed legislation to cancel the MCAS this year. Please also consider calling your legislators to follow up on your email. You can find your legislators’ phone numbers by clicking here.
