Urge Your Legislators to Support the MTA-Backed Debt-Free Public Higher Education Bill!

The MTA is supporting legislation to make debt-free public higher education a reality in the Commonwealth.

The bill, An Act to guarantee debt-free public higher education, was filed by Senator Jamie Eldridge (D-Acton) and Representative Natalie Higgins (D-Leominster). The bill would establish that it is the policy of the Commonwealth to guarantee free public higher education as a right for all students. Specifically, it would create a grant program to cover tuition and fees for all residents of the Commonwealth who are attending a public higher education institution in Massachusetts and would provide aid to federal Pell Grant-eligible students to cover additional costs of attendance. The legislation would also ensure that funds from this program do not affect students’ eligibility for other state grants, gift aid, institutional aid or federal aid, including Pell Grants through the FAFSA process.
