URGENT ACTION: Stop the inhumane treatment of Black prisoners in HMP Swaleside Segregation Unit
Shaqueille Plummer has now been held in segregation for over 14 months. “Segregation” is a euphemism for solitary confinement – spending almost 24 hours alone in a cell everyday, deprived of all sensory stimulation.
Black prisoners and prisoners of colour are subject to more and longer periods in segregation than white prisoners, transferred from seg to seg. Shaqueille has recently been transferred from HMP Long Lartin segregation Unit to HMP Swaleside.
Shaqueille has been denied his property, which includes his books and important legal paperwork. Access to reading materials is vitally important to survive the brutal conditions of solitary confinement. There is no electricity in his cell. This means no TV, no hot water. He is confined to an empty cell on his own for almost 24 hours a day. Shaqueille has also been denied access to phone calls and legal calls.
Take action now, we must not allow the prison walls to enable the prison to get away with their abusive treatment.
