URGENT! Tell Gov. Mills to let LD 1971 become law to protect immigrants in Maine!
As our immigrant friends, family, and neighbors are being abducted by ICE, we need to make sure Gov. Janet Mills doesn't veto a bill that helps protect them. A crucial piece of legislation to protect the rights and safety of Maine’s immigrant residents has been sitting on her desk for over six months and she has chosen not to sign it. At this point, she can either veto it or do nothing and let it become law, which is what we want.
Sponsored by Rep. Deqa Dhalac, LD 1971 is “An Act to Protect Workers in This State by Clarifying the Relationship of State and Local Law Enforcement Agencies with Federal Immigration Authorities.” This bill will prevent local and Maine state police from carrying out immigration enforcement unless there is a court order attached, and establishes protections for immigrant detainees.
We have already drafted an email for you—all you need to do is add your name and hit send. It takes less than a minute and will show Mills that Mainers are not ok with our communities being torn apart by Trump’s violent agenda.
Thank you so much for taking the time to act on this crucial issue!
