Vote no on SB1988

Please help us defeat SB1988. As now amended, the bill opens the door for community colleges to offer bachelor’s degrees in areas that directly compete with existing university programs. This is a major shift in Illinois higher education and is being rushed through with minimal debate and public transparency.

There are serious concerns:

  • Increase in Property Taxes: Without designated state support, community colleges may raise property taxes or cut essential programs to finance these new degrees.
  • Program quality: There are no clear safeguards to ensure academic standards or accountability after the initial approval of the new degree.
  • Impact on universities: This undercuts the mission and resources of existing four-year institutions rather than investing in and strengthening them.
