Yes on Building Code Fixes, Mixed Use Zoning, and E-Permitting Expansion

More key housing bills are being heard this week in the House Committee on Municipal Government and Housing. Use our easy letter template to submit testimony showing your support for building more homes in Rhode Island. Letters are due by 1 PM!

  • H5958, Mixed-use Zones: This bill expands access to housing near jobs and amenities through mixed use zones. Many cities and towns contain aging strip malls and vacant commercial lots that are served by public infrastructure, creating an opportunity to create new homes near businesses, jobs, and transit without increasing greenfield development.

  • H5509/H5804, E-permitting: These bills will extend Rhode Island's successful e-permitting system to the Department of Environmental Transportation, the Department of Environmental Management, and the Coastal Resources Management Council. Outdated paper-based processes are inherently more costly and time consuming. To expand housing options and affordability, we need to get e-permitting at every state agency that touches the permitting process.
  • H5373, Building Code Reform: This bill will make small multi-family homes more affordable to build by categorizing triple-deckers and fourplexes under the residential building code (the same as duplexes) rather than the code for office buildings, hotels, and high-rises.

Thank you and please spread the word.
