"description": "More than 50 years ago on April 28, Workers Memorial Day, the Occupational Safety and Health Act went into effect, promising every worker the right to a safe job — a fundamental right. The law was won because of the tireless efforts of the labor movement, which organized for safer working conditions and demanded action from the government to protect working people. Since then, unions and our allies have fought hard to make that promise a reality, winning protections that have made jobs safer and saved lives. But these protections are under attack by the current presidential administration. This year, the Illinois AFL-CIO worked with Senator Robert Peters to introduce SB 1976. The bill creates the Illinois Workers’ Rights and Safety Act which would preserve the long-established workplace protections under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Fair Labor Standards Act, and the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act. In the face of federal uncertainty, Illinois must be proactive and guarantee that Illinois workers will have the same protections this time next year regardless of any federal rollbacks.",
