"description": "Journalism should be done by human beings for human beings. The unionized employees of the Pioneer Press recognize that artificial intelligence can be a powerful tool for journalists when used responsibly, but it cannot replace them. That’s why we want common-sense protections in our labor contract to ensure that: Any content appearing under a reporter’s byline must be their own work, rather than generated by AI; AI-generated content must be reviewed by a human journalist before publication and labeled as such for readers; AI may not be used to generate photorealistic images (a.k.a. deep fakes) or to alter real news photographs; and The Pioneer Press may not lay off employees in order to replace them with AI. The newspaper’s hedge fund-owned parent company, MediaNews Group, has repeatedly rejected each of these proposals in contract negotiations this year. In fact, the company’s lawyers have refused to accept any contractual limits on how this technology is used. Instead, they maintain that MNG’s current AI policy – which management can change at any time – sufficiently addresses our concerns. We know readers and advertisers value the fair and accurate reporting found in the Pioneer Press. We’re asking you to continue supporting this community institution and help us ensure it remains the trusted resource it has been for more than 175 years. Tell the leadership of the Pioneer Press that you don’t want AI slop in your news and support us in our fight to enshrine these protections in our contract!",
