"description": "Over 320 union painters working under the Signatory Painting Contractors Organization (SPCO) contract in Oregon may be going on strike soon - and it’s the job of the Oregon Labor Movement to stand behind them every step of the way. They’re going on strike to fight for a living wage. International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT) members are being forced to give up the American dream. No longer able to make ends meet working a full 40 hour week, many IUPAT members are taking on additional hours or even side gigs just to keep a roof over their heads and food on their table. An injury to one is an injury to all, and no one working a full time job should have to struggle to afford the basics. Painting requires technical knowledge in the proper mixing and application of various chemicals and substances. It requires skill to apply these substances to surfaces in a way that is aesthetically pleasing. Painters are more likely than other trades to interact with the public as they are often some of the last workers on each construction project, thus painting requires professionalism and friendliness more than other trades. And painting is dangerous, involving exposure to harmful chemicals and working in high areas. In spite of all this, painters currently earn less than any other trade. It’s time to raise the wage for these hardworking IUPAT members. Please take a moment to sign onto a petition calling on the Signatory Painting Contractors Organization (SPCO) to provide a living wage for their workers.",
