"description": "Indiana's public schools are facing unprecedented financial pressures. Recent legislative changes under Senate Enrolled Act 1 (SEA 1) fundamentally altered how property taxes are assessed, significantly shrinking the local revenue base that directly funds Indiana public school districts. The Problem: SEA 1 and Rising Operational Costs Shrinking Revenue Base: Under SEA 1, property tax assessments generate less local funding even when tax rates remain unchanged. Escalating Operating Expenses: While revenue drops, fixed costs for basic school operations—including transportation, fuel, building utilities, property/health insurance, competitive staffing, and instructional materials—continue to rise due to inflation and market demands. Impact on Students and Workers: Without supplemental funding, school districts face drastic budget shortfalls leading to eliminated bus routes, larger class sizes, cancelled programs, and workforce reductions across teachers, support staff, and school operations personnel. The Solution: Supporting Local School Referendums School referendums give local voters a direct, democratic opportunity to protect the people, programs, and essential services that students rely on every day. Voting YES allows communities to bridge the financial gap created by state property tax changes and keep public education strong. Solidarity with public education is a core labor value. Union members and working families have a vital stake in supporting local school referendums: Protecting Good Union & Public Sector Jobs: Referendum dollars fund local salaries and benefits for teachers, instructional aides, bus drivers, custodians, maintenance staff, and cafeteria workers. Strengthening Working-Class Communities: Quality public schools preserve neighborhood stability, support home values, and provide safe, reliable environments for working parents' children. Investing in Future Generations: Strong academic, technical, and extracurricular programs ensure the children of union families receive a high-quality education and career preparation. Countering State-Level Revenue Cuts: When state policy reduces local tax revenues, local collective action at the ballot box is the most effective defense for our communities. Property tax changes under SEA 1 reduced local funding for Indiana schools while costs for utilities, fuel & staffing keep rising. Local referendums give us the chance to protect our students and staff. Vote YES! 🗳️📚 #UnionStrong #VoteYesForSchools #IndianaLabor",
