"description": "Tell state lawmakers to support the bipartisan Ballot Spending Transparency Act filed by Rep Dan Ryan (H.868) and Senator Sal DiDomenico (S.507). In recent years state ballot questions have attracted tens of millions of dollars spent to convince voters how they should vote. In the last ten years a total of $340 million has been received by ballot question committees both as cash and as in-kind donations. Our current law includes a very lax reporting schedule as ballot question committees only have to report 60 days before the election leaving an eight month window wherein contributions and expenditures are not disclosed in real time. With so much money coming into statewide ballot questions, Massachusetts should take steps to ensure stronger transparency with campaign contributions (both cash and in-kind) and expenditures attempting to influence public policy. This bill would transition ballot question committees into the depository system, the same process by which all state, county, and most municipal elected officials use. This will ensure greater transparency through more regular monthly reporting during the current eight month period between January 1st and the 60 Day Report. It will also increase the confidence the public has in the reporting. Contact your state lawmakers today and tell them to support the Ballot Spending Transparency Act!",
