"description": "The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has announced plans to change broadcast ownership rules to allow broadcast companies to buy as many TV stations as they want – a violation of federal law and a major threat to local news. This move would result in massive layoffs and decimate local news. We know what happens when companies merge. Newsrooms are eliminated, workers are laid off, and our communities lose yet another local news outlet. The merger between Nexstar and TEGNA would only be the beginning of a merger wave, until only one or two companies own all our broadcast stations. This move would violate federal law - Congress set the “National Cap,” which states that a broadcast company cannot own stations that collectively reach over 39% of the population. The FCC can’t just decide that the law no longer applies. This move is illegal. Sign our petition and tell the FCC that we need broadcast ownership rules to protect local news. Congress has set the broadcast ownership cap, which the FCC cannot override. For more information, see NABET-CWA’s comments to the FCC opposing removal of the national cap.",
