"description": "2020 was a hard year for working people. While most of us struggled like never before, large corporations reaped record profits. Since March, the fortune of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has increased by $75.6 billion—42 times the cost of all pandemic hazard pay that Amazon gave its roughly 1 million workers in 2020. Amazon recently went public with their plan to build a 700,000 square foot distribution space just north of Burbank Airport on the newly constructed Avion property. Twice in as many years, the Burbank Unified School District received over 64% support for a parcel tax to fund Burbank schools, just below the 66.7% threshold needed to pass a school tax. Burbank also needs to expand rental assistance, build affordable housing, and shore up funding for city services during this pandemic. The most valuable resource in our city is the land we work and live on. The wealthy who own the biggest parcels of land in Burbank must start paying their fair share. We don't have to reinvent the wheel. We can build on the experiences of previous efforts to pass progressive taxes, and on the successful effort to pass an Amazon Tax in Seattle in 2020. Determined organizing and a fighting approach ultimately reaped $240 million per year for the city to fund social housing and a Green New Deal. Tax Amazon Burbank intends to use the lessons of Seattle and previous efforts in Burbank to bring together union members, progressive organizations, and everyone else that wants large corporations to pay their fair share. We need to build an organized, democratically run movement to Tax Amazon and other big businesses to fund our schools, create high-quality social housing, continue to offer COVID relief, affordable healthcare, and sustainable green energy. Join the Tax Amazon Burbank Coalition and have a voice in making sure that the large corporations that profit in Burbank, pay their fair share of taxes in Burbank.",
