"description": "As book bans accelerate nationwide and federal protections weaken, it’s time to move from conversation to action. April 20th is Right to Read Day, a day of action during National Library Week. Join Jews for a Secular Democracy’s Jewish Women and Religious Freedom in Pittsburgh Project on this important day for a special nation-wide "Call With Us!" focused on H.R. 7661, the so-called “Stop the Sexualization of Children" Act. This dangerous federal bill has already passed the House Committee on Education and Workforce and could move quickly. It would threaten public-school funding for books, materials and programs that lawmakers label “sexually oriented,” including material the bill says “involves gender dysphoria or transgenderism.” In other words, it could be used to limit what young people are allowed to read, learn, and see reflected in their schools. And when politicians use public institutions to restrict reading based on religious ideology and carve out favored treatment for a specific religious view, that is not religious freedom! That is censorship and religious coercion. The American Library Association has described H.R. 7661 as “dangerous,” “vague,” and an invitation to government censorship. This is especially important to the Jewish community, and Jewish women and Jews of other marginalized genders in particular, because censorship driven by dominant religious ideology often targets books and information about gender, sexuality, reproductive freedom and minority identities. We know that Jewish safety and equality depend on public institutions that serve people of all faiths and none. In this special 30-45 minute advocacy session, we’ll briefly explain what the bill does, why it matters, share simple talking points, and then make calls together in real time to urge Congress to oppose H.R. 7661 and defend the right to read, inclusive public education and true religious freedom for all. If you’d like to catch up on the issue, we invite you to watch the documentary “The Librarians” HERE and then watch our interview with the film’s Director Kim A. Snyder HERE. You can find the bill HERE and a statement about the bill from the American Library Association information HERE. No prior advocacy experience is necessary. No prior knowledge of the issue or the specific bill is needed. We will guide you step by step. Sign up today and join us action on Right to Read Day! This event is part of our “Freedom to Read Without Religious Coercion” series, an initiative of the Jewish Women and Religious Freedom in Pittsburgh Project sponsored by the Jewish Women's Foundation of Greater Pittsburgh and underwritten, in part, by Trustee Nancy Weissman, in memory of her beloved mother-in-law, Trustee Jackie Wechsler. We are grateful for their on-going support!",
