"description": "Aucklanders love our beaches, coastline ecology and wonderful weather Yet with climate change, we’re facing higher sea levels, more frequent coastal flooding and extreme weather A metre sea level rise will result in forced migration internationally, flooding of pacific islands, and destruction of irreplaceable ecology. In New Zealand, the Insurance council estimates $22 billion worth of essential public services and private property will be affected by 2100. It gets worse. Our current levels of emission are steering us towards the irreversible melting of sea ice. This will eventually result in 50m sea level rises, potentially ... and an unrecognisable planet. Help pressure the Auckland council to declare a Climate Emergency Media coverage isn’t getting the change we need fast enough. It’s time for serious, non-violent action that is potentially arrestable. It’ll also be fun and with music. We’ll need non-arrestable support and we’ll have a family-friendly space at the beach. The action at Okahu Bay for a number of reasons: It’s already had increased flooding, It’s one of the first places to be affected by sea level rises in Auckland, and Tamaki Drive, next to Okahu Bay, isn't a safe road for the many cyclists who enjoy riding around our eastern coast. Ok, it’s also a beach and an excellent play ground. ;) What to bring Friends and family, lunch and good vibes. For our protest (and the swim afterwards) we’re going with a water-theme. Here are some ideas: Swimming clothes: togs, wet suits, or if you want to be creative dress up as a mermaid etc, Props: snorkels, goggles, boogey boards, surfboards, kayaks etc. (Bikes are welcome too!) Be creative! Please don’t bring banners and placards, we have our visual messages sorted! How it will work Meet at the beach at 11 am. The action will start right on twelve noon. This action is part of the International Week of Extinction Rebellion and on the New Zealand Day of Rebellion. See other actions in Aotearoa New Zealand here: [insert link].",
