"description": "FIGHT THE HIKE - a coalition of over a dozen Maine public interest organizations - INVITES YOU to stand with us against CMP's latest, sneaky rate hike proposal and to tell the Maine Public Utilities Commission (PUC): SAY NO TO SNEAKY CMP RATE HIKES! INVEST IN THE GRID FROM THEIR PROFITS, NOT FROM OUR POCKETS! Background: Over the next year, CMP wants at least $216 more per year from the average customer. After being rejected last fall, CMP is now asking the Maine PUC to raise their revenue by $190 million. They're telling us it's a decrease in our bills, but this is false. In truth, CMP's proposal would increase bills from their currently projected levels -- first this July, then again next May. Maine's electricity rates are already 5th highest in the nation, and though not all of this is due to regulated distribution charges, that part of the bill has increased at about twice the rate of inflation over the past ten years. And based on a recent study, CMP's distant owners will keep $27 million per year of their proposed increase as profits. By reducing CMP's allowed returns, the PUC can make sure the investments in our grid needs are affordable.",
