"description": "On April 7 th , NoMi Indivisible is hosting one of a series of MI-01 District-wide Meet the Candidates forums. These forums are a coordinated non-partisan series of forums that will bring congressional candidates directly to communities across the district early in the election cycle, in advance of the primary. Typically only 20- 30% of voters participate in primary elections, meaning a minority of the population selects who will be each party’s candidate in the General election. Primaries actually have a greater potential for bringing about real political change because the more people who vote in them, the more the candidate chosen reflects the views of the people they serve. When you vote in a primary election, you empower yourself, and your community. Too often, voters in rural and remote communities have limited opportunities to engage directly with congressional candidates at all, let alone in advance of primary voting. This event aims to change that by bringing the candidates to the voters of Michigan's First Congressional District (MI-01) so we can hear directly from the people who want to represent us in Washington. NoMi is pleased to have as co-sponsors of the event our local highly regarded local booksellers: Between the Covers in Harbor Springs and McLean & Eakin bookstore in Petoskey. This is a moderated and structured forum in which candidates will be asked to respond to questions of specific interest to our community. All primary candidates have been invited to participate in the forum which will be grounded in fairness and respect. We ask that audience members remain quiet and respectful so every candidate can be heard. The event will also be live streamed for those who can’t attend in person. Four candidates have confirmed their participation: Kyle Blomquist - Democrat (Iron Mountain) Justin Michal - Republican (Grayling), Zebulon Featherley - Independent (Traverse City) and Wayne Stiles - Democrat (Traverse City). Coffee and water will be provided. 5:30 pm — Doors open; informal meet & greet (Carnegie Building) 6:00 – 7:30 pm — Forum 7:30 – 8:00 pm — Post-forum candidate chat",
