"description": "Note: The host has a dog who will be present The Right of the People: Democracy and the Case for a New American Founding is a book published in 2025 that was written by Osita Nwavenu. Released in the aftermath of the 2024 election, the book has three core theses. The first thesis is that democracy is good; the second thesis is that America is not a democracy; the third thesis is that America should become a democracy. In part 1 of the book, “What Is Democracy?”, democracy is examined and defended. In part two of the book, “A New Founding”, Nwavenu explores and fleshes out his other two assertions. To elaborate on his claim that America is not a democracy, he shares a narrative of the Constitutional Convention that provides historical context to the Constitution's anti-democratic elements, framing them as a reactionary response to movements by colonists at the time. For the third thesis, Nwavenu considers a variety of proposals that could make the United States a democracy. These reforms are not simply electoral or institutional tweaks, but changes that the author asserts would so radically transform the country so as to constitute “A New Founding”, similar to how the Reconstruction amendments arguably constituted a second founding in the 1860’s. This new founding includes efforts towards a democratic economy in addition to a democratic politics. Ambitious in aim, The Right of the People offers incisive commentary on democratic theory, American history, and our present moment. We will be discussing the entire book, but if you do not have time to read it we suggest you prioritize the Introduction and the chapters called The Meaning of Democracy, and A Republic Kept.",
