"description": "YJAM was inspired by the advocacy of Tracy McClard, the mother of an incarcerated child who raised public awareness about the injustice of the criminal and juvenile legal systems. Led by the Campaign for Youth Justice, what began in 2008 as a 5K race in Missouri has evolved into a nationally-recognized month dedicated to shedding light on an issue that impacts nearly 200,000 youth each year. On October 7th, 8th, and 10th, the Georgetown Juvenile Justice Initiative will host 3 evenings of events, themed Act, Inspire, Lead: Transforming Youth Justice as part of our Youth Justice Action month celebration. These events will inspire advocacy and activism in youth justice, amplify the voices of youth activists, and educate attendees on the work of local organizations to protect the rights of youth. Thursday, October 10th: The Georgetown Juvenile Justice Clinic in partnership with the Georgetown Law Office of Public Interest and Community Service will host a career expo with DC based youth justice organizations. If you think you might want to pursue any career that involves youth advocacy or criminal or juvenile defense, this event is for you! At the expo attendees may visit each table where organization participant's will highlight their work in youth justice and current ways to get involved. The expo will be followed by a 45-minute panel discussion with organizations in the areas of: Policy, Direct Services, and Organizing who will speak about careers in youth justice and criminal defense. Attendees may ask questions and engage with organization participant’s immediately following the panel. Refreshments will be provided. Join us!",
