"description": "Join us with signs, rain or shine, in Maria Hernandez Park at 3:30 on Saturday, May 9th to make some noise for justice for Mr. Okeke and all of our neighbors who are suffering due to the violent, senseless, and cruel tactics of our federal government. On Saturday, May 2nd in Bushwick, ICE agents stopped a car driven by a New Yorker, Mr. Chidozie Wilson Okeke. They broke Mr. Okeke’s vehicle’s windows, and hit, tased, choked, and brutalized him while he called out for a lawyer, and for help from passersby. Officers ignored his screams of pain. They cut his seatbelt with a knife and dragged him from the vehicle, and then took him to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center for evaluation, demonstrating that they were aware that their actions included potential serious harm to Mr. Okeke. At 2 a.m. on Sunday morning, ICE agents dragged Mr. Okeke back out of the hospital and stuffed him into a vehicle. At this point, neighbors had gathered to protest the agents’ brutality towards Mr. Okeke, and the NYPD had also been deployed. There is video of NYPD officers closing one of the doors of that vehicle on the scene, and accepting ICE’s thanks for the collaboration. Also on video, NYPD threw concerned neighbors to the ground, arresting nine people. We call for justice for Mr. Okeke, and for an end to the brutalization of Black and brown New Yorkers by agents of the state, starting with consequences for the ICE agents who harmed Mr. Okeke and the NYPD agents using excessive force towards protestors. To this end, we call for 1) the City to furnish legal support for Mr. Okeke’s immigration case, as well as any available relief given the brutality and excessive force with which federal agents acted and which City agents did not address 2) passage of New York for All in its entirety — no carve outs, and no exceptions — to protect everyone in New York State from insidious collaborations between local law enforcement and ICE, 3) the passage of the CURB Act to end the deployment of the NYPD’s SRG to target protestors and 4) the continuing education of New Yorkers in how to stand up to ICE. and 5) continuing to make sure that ICE has no way to stick around in our communities.",
