"description": "W.E.B. Du Bois's Black Reconstruction in America is a groundbreaking Marxist history of the rise and fall of Reconstruction in the United States—the world-historic revolution of democracy in the South led by formerly enslaved Black people, and the racist counter-revolution of the white planter class that swept away this new society and delivered Jim Crow. This reading group, hosted by the Marxist Unity Group and open to all DSA members (and friends and family), covers the entirety of Black Reconstruction, and runs from 1 - 3pm ET every Saturday from July 11th to October 10th. After the Supreme Court toppled one of the last remaining pillars of the Voting Rights Act and paved the way for racist gerrymandering in the former Confederacy and the further disenfranchisement of Black people, Marxist Unity Group believes it is critically important for DSA to sharpen our analysis of Black liberation, its history and its deep relation to the fight for democracy in the United States. Below you'll find the schedule of dates for the reading group sessions and the chapters we will be reading for each session. Participants are asked to complete the reading before each session, and during each session we will be presenting a summary of the week's reading, sharing what we took away from the it in breakout groups, and going over discussion questions. We will be working from the Free Press version of the book for page numbers. By taking this action, you agree to receive updates from Marxist Unity Group, including our publication Light & Air. You may unsubscribe at any time. Week # Date Chapter(s) covered 0 July 11th Introduction 1 July 18th I. The Black Worker, II. The White Worker, and III. The Planter 2 July 25th IV.
