"description": "In 2023, 7,000 nurses across two major hospitals struck for three days in NYC, leading the largest open-ended private sector nurses’ strike in U.S. history (though this fact received little recognition). The main demand was improved nurse to patient ratios, which they won, as well as raises and the strongest staffing language in any contract nationally. At that time, the unity and strength built among nurses took the hospitals by surprise. A strike in early 2026 is a very real possibility - a contract campaign is heating up and individual bargaining units have the right to decide to strike. It is in the nurses’ hands. However, the bosses have since wised up in many ways to the nurses tactics, and the element of surprise that nurses took advantage of last time is now gone. Nurses may need to bring new strategies and stronger community support than last time to win their demands. In this new political moment with a left beginning to feel its power in NYC on the heels of getting Zohran elected and creating many new socialists and activists, there is a big opportunity to increase community support, as well as educate and bring many more people into a labor solidarity fight. Join us to hear from nurses about recent wins, what they’re fighting for in this contract campaign, what’s at stake for New York City, and how to get involved if nurses strike.",
