"description": "On August 16th 1819, government forces charged on a peaceful crowd of 60,000 people at a pro-democracy rally at St Peter's Fields, near where St Peter's Square is today. 18 men, women and children are known to have been killed, and over 700 injured, all for demanding the right to vote and fair representation. On Saturday 13th August, Make Votes Matter Manchester will visit the site to commemorate the Peterloo Massacre, celebrate the political reform that came after, and continue the fight for fair votes through proportional representation in the UK. We’ll be holding an information stall about proportional representation outside the Central Library in St Peter’s Square (Manchester, M2 5PD). Afterwards, we’ll pay a visit to the Peterloo Monument on Windmill Street at 3pm. We’ll finish with a gathering nearby at The Britons Protection pub (which was standing at the time of Peterloo!) for anyone who wants to stay and chat afterwards. If you have specific accessibility requirements please get in touch and we will accommodate them.",
