"description": "On Monday, July 11th, Chief Judge Janet DiFiore of the New York Court of Appeals announced her intent to step down from the role at the end of August. This unexpected vacancy presents an opportunity to fill the seat with a true progressive champion, to shift the balance of power on the Court of Appeals (the highest court in the state of New York), and to impact the administration of justice throughout the state. However, Governor Kathy Hochul nominated Justice Hector LaSalle, which prompted significant pushback from labor unions, reproductive justice organizations, and more who were concerned about his prior decisions. Largely through the efforts of The Court New York Deserves Coalition, Justice LaSalle's nomination was defeated. Hear from some of the advocates who led the fight against LaSalle's nomination to learn about the nomination process, what they learned, and what comes next. Join PPP's NYU, Fordham, and Cardozo chapters and panelists Alice Fontier, Peter Martin, and Noah Rosenblum for a discussion on the importance of NY state courts and how law students and others can get involved in the push for a pro-people judiciary in New York.",
