"description": "Join us at City Hall to urge LA City Council's Planning & Land Use Management Committee to protect long-term residents of LA by voting NO on Airbnb's "Vacation Rental Ordinance!" Short-term rentals threaten housing for our neighbors and our communities. That’s why the City of Los Angeles has a Home-Sharing Ordinance that allows people to rent out their own homes for a little extra cash, but prevents landlords and corporate speculators from flipping our housing into de facto hotels. The number of STRs we already have in LA have raised rent for the rest of us by as much as $810/year, and that’s partly because the City doesn’t enforce the law. Over 60% of all STRs in LA are illegal, and just in December of 2024, there were over 4500 non-compliant listings in LA—but the City only issued 103 citations in the entire year. Airbnb’s solution is to undermine the ordinance and make it easier to take more units off the market—which will mean less housing, higher rent, and more people living on the streets. Their "Save Our Services" coalition is working to create 31,000 new permits for vacation rentals--a massive increase over the 9,000 that currently exist. They claim this "Vacation Rental Ordinance" will bring in additional funding in hotel taxes—but adding more STRs doesn't create more tourists, and the ordinance would remove protections that keep speculators from evicting tenants in favor of STRs. Meanwhile, a recent study shows that if the City enforced the existing law on just 5% of the illegal STRs in LA, the city could bring in $42 million a year—more than all STRs remit in taxes to the city. It's clear that enforcing the Home-Sharing Ordinance is the best way to bring in revenue while returning housing to the market. City Council needs to hear from YOU to reject Airbnb's Save Our Services Coalition's push to corporatize our affordable housing. Join us at City Hall on Tuesday, March 24th, to tell the Planning & Land Use Management Committee to reject corporate interests, and protect long-term residents! Better Neighbors LA is a coalition of Southern California hosts, tenants, housing activists, hotel workers, and community members. We believe the best way to support true home-sharing for hosts and guests is also the best way to protect jobs and the community: by curbing illegal commercial activity in the short-term rental industry.",
