"description": "The Crisis: Record Backlogs and Degrading Services As we enter 2026, the Social Security Administration (SSA) is in a state of unprecedented turmoil. Following a year of aggressive budget cuts and personnel reductions, the agency is failing to meet its core mission of serving the American people. Recent reports highlight a system at a breaking point: Unprecedented Delays: Social Security is ending the year with record-high backlogs. Millions of Americans are stuck in financial limbo, facing long wait times for disability claims and hours-long delays on phone lines. Targeted Cuts: Under the guise of efficiency, sweeping staff reductions and the removal of independent oversight have hollowed out the agency’s operational capacity. Backdoor Benefit Reductions: Stricter eligibility criteria and AI-driven "waste" audits are being used to effectively cut benefits for older workers and the most vulnerable populations. Operational Turmoil: High-level purges and a federal hiring freeze have left remaining workers overwhelmed and unable to provide the timely service seniors and the disabled rely on for survival. The Day of Action: January 14 We cannot allow our earned benefits to be dismantled by administrative neglect. On January 14, advocates, retirees, and workers across the country will mobilize to demand that the government prioritize people over "efficiency" metrics. This is a coordinated effort to show the administration and Congress that we will not stay silent while the SSA is systematically weakened. Our Three Demands To restore the Social Security Administration and protect the benefits of millions, we are calling on leadership to take immediate action on the following: Fund Social Security and the rest of the government on January 30. We demand a full funding package that ends the cycle of uncertainty and provides the SSA with the resources necessary to eliminate the claims backlog. Lift the hiring freeze and fully staff the agency. The SSA must be allowed to hire and train the personnel required to serve beneficiaries without delays. Modernization cannot happen without the human hands needed to process complex claims. Pay Social Security workers a living wage. The crisis of service is also a crisis of labor. To attract and retain the dedicated civil servants who manage our benefits, the government must provide competitive, living wages that reflect the importance of their work. How to Participate Join a local event on January 14 to stand up for the Social Security we earned. Whether it is a rally, a town hall, or a digital day of action, your voice is essential to keeping Social Security strong.",
