Session three covers how deregulation gutted public credit and housing starting in the 1970s. Session four makes a focus on a state public bank and a Vienna-style public housing model, where the city builds and owns housing directly instead of subsidizing private developers to do it. This session, before we get into history and solutions, sets the theoretical groundwork: what&#x27;s actually broken about housing under capitalism. We&#x27;re reading Friedrich Engels&#x27; The Housing Question. Engels wrote it in 1872 to demolish the reformist idea that better landlords, better regulation, or workers buying their own homes could fix a housing crisis that&#x27;s built into capitalism itself. That argument still holds up, and it&#x27;s a helpful foundation for everything else this series will cover. You can read it free here.
