"description": "Musa Roshdy is an Egyptian-American educator, writer, and photographer who sailed with the civilian-led Global Sumud Flotilla mission to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. During the Spring 2026 mission, which departed from Barcelona on April 15th, Musa sailed on Safsaf, the “mother ship” of the flotilla, alongside leaders of the movement from around the world united in their common goal of answering the call of Palestinian civil society to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. On April 22nd, Musa spoke at the opening ceremony of the Global Sumud Parliamentary Congress. The full event was live streamed and recorded, and Musa’s comments can be heard here. The congress was an event in Brussels put on by the Global Sumud Flotilla organization that brought together lawmakers, NGOs, government representatives, and international/legal experts to discuss how to use the political opportunity created by the flotilla to open humanitarian aid corridors and support the human rights of Palestinians. The end result of the convention of lawmakers was the Brussels Declaration on State Responsibility, Self-Determination and the Protection of Life in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. On April 29th, 22 of the 57 boats in the Global Sumud Flotilla were intercepted by the Israeli military late at night in international waters off of the coast of Greece, over 600 nautical miles from Gaza. Musa’s boat, Safsaf, was one of the boats that Israel illegally boarded. Musa, along with 180 other activists on the flotilla (which included 14 other US citizens), were threatened at gunpoint, detained, taken on board an Israeli military ship, and held for approximately 40 hours in a makeshift open-air prison. Musa will speak about Israel’s illegal detention and abuse of civilians at sea, the ongoing civilian flotilla mission to deliver aid to Gaza, and the importance of taking a stand against human rights abuses in Palestine.",
