"description": "North Carolina is on the frontlines of the fight to recognize the legal rights of rivers, wetlands, forests, and sacred sites. From the foothills of the Appalachians to the coastal plains, Indigenous communities are resisting fossil fuel projects, such as the Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP), Southgate, and Southeast Supply Enhancement (SSEP), while advancing a transformative legal framework: the Rights of Nature. This session will share how 7 Directions of Service is building a state-based Rights of Nature movement rooted in Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK), cultural ceremony, and community lawmaking. We will explore how Indigenous law is being applied to: Protect rivers and wetlands from pipeline construction and pollution Restore sovereignty over sacred lands and burial sites Mobilize youth, elders, and grassroots leaders to defend living systems as relatives, not resources Session Highlights Case Study: The Rights of the Haw River Campaign – defending a lifeline of the Piedmont region Frontline Testimonies: Voices from MVP Southgate and SSEP Resistance Cultural Framing: How ceremony and ancestral governance guide environmental law Action Plan: Building a statewide Rights of Nature network in North Carolina Why Now? North Carolina’s rivers and wetlands face unprecedented threats from the expansion of fossil fuels, climate change, and state-level rollbacks of environmental protections. The Rights of Nature framework offers a path forward—one that treats ecosystems as rights-bearing entities with the power to defend themselves in court. Speakers (tentative) TBD Call to Action: Join us to learn, witness, and help grow the Rights of Nature movement in North Carolina. Together, we can protect land, life, and future generations—before it’s too late.",
