"description": "We'll be meeting as a group in front of the building at 4:30pm! Together we'll walk into the meeting around 4:45 to get seats and sign up for public comments. There's free parking available if you park in 900 Prospect Garage across the street. Why is this important? Tuesday, September 13th is the first County Council meeting after their 6-week break. This meeting, County Council is planning to push ahead with two very unpopular resolutions that would expand mass incarceration in Cleveland metro area for another 50 years. County council wants to: 1) spend up to $20 million to buy the poisoned, toxic land at 2700 Transport Road for building another jail in Cleveland. This land is valued at only $2.7 million. (Resolution R2022-0297) 2) permanently increase the sales tax and use it to pay for building another jail. (Ordinance O2022-0005) These resolutions would take money from people struggling to make ends meet, and use it to fill the pockets of the wealthy consultants who are planning this project. We don't believe in taking more money away from struggling people to pay for more incarceration. Our county already has the highest sales tax in the entire state. The cost of sales tax is felt most heavily by people with a low income. And because our city has such a large racial wealth gap, this means Black people will be disproportionately burdened to pay for a jail that they would also be disproportionately targeted to get locked inside. Instead we need to be investing in our communities so people can thrive and end the root causes of violence and suffering once and for all. Join the mass movement as we tell County Council "No New Jail!" No to Resolution 0297 and Ordinance 0005! These next two County Council meetings (Tuesday 9/13 and Wednesday 9/28) are the most important county council meetings of the year for people fighting mass incarceration!",
