	"description": "On Tuesday, the international scientific publisher Springer Nature sold Scientific American, the iconic 181-year old publication famous for its authoritative coverage of science to LabX Media Group. Large numbers of staff were immediately laid off, and salaries of remaining workers were cut by as much as 30 percent. Staff at Scientific American had just voted to unionize so they could help improve the publication’s sustainable and improved operation for the future. We should call this action what it is – blatant union-busting. Join us for a rally outside of Springer Nature offices on Tuesday, June 30th at 5pm ET to support workers at Scientific American, protect workers&#x27; right to organize and defend free speech. The layoffs and cuts will devastate Scientific American. The unit is calling on their new owners to immediately recognize the union and meet us at the bargaining table to work together to steer a sustainable future of Scientific American – including, but going far beyond, a commitment to respecting our editorial independence.
