"description": "On June 9 at 6 PM, the Rhode Island Coastal Resources Management Council (CRMC) will be holding a hearing for the application by SouthCoast Wind. There will be public comments taken at this hearing and it is critical that supporters of offshore wind show up! SouthCoast Wind is an offshore wind project expected to deliver 1,200 megawatts of clean energy to the New England power grid within the next five years - but first, we need officials to approve the installation of cables to bring the energy ashore. With the turbines in federal waters, submarine cables will run under the Sakonnet River and briefly over land in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, before reaching the connection point in Somerset, Massachusetts. Wind energy will then flow onto the power lines that serve the New England region. Read more about the hearing and project below! The CRMC was created by the state legislature with the following mission: "...to preserve, protect, develop, and where possible, restore the coastal resources of the state for this and succeeding generations through comprehensive and coordinated long-range planning and management designed to produce the maximum benefit for society from such coastal resources; and that the preservation and restoration of ecological systems shall be the primary guiding principal upon which environmental alteration of coastal resources shall be measured, judged and regulated." You can read more about the CRMC on their website here. The CRMC is interested in comments only on impacts to the coastal environment—not cost, reliability, jobs, etc. In this hearing is very appropriate to talk about the climate crisis, what it will do to our waterways and coast, and why this project is needed to prevent the worst of the climate crisis. RSVP if you are interested in attending and we will be following up shortly with more information!",
