"description": "This is the fourth session of The Bleeding Heart of Africa. In this session, we will be discussing chapter 5 of Cobalt Red as well as chapters 17 and 20-22 of Andrée Blouin's My Country, Africa. As someone who lived through these tumultuous events, Blouin's perspective is absolutely crucial in understanding Congo's transition to independence, as well as the brutal and violent suppression of their national liberation struggle. The Bleeding Heart of Africa is a reading group hosted by the NYC-DSA Anti-War Political Education Subcommittee that will discuss colonialism, neocolonialism, and resource extraction in Congo. The syllabus will be centered around the book Cobalt Red: How the Blood of the Congo Powers Our Lives by Siddharth Kara, and will also feature supplemental texts written by Andrée Blouin, Kwame Nkrumah, Georges Nzongola-Ntalaja and others. 75% of the world's cobalt, an essential mineral used in every rechargeable battery, is mined in Congo under subhuman and exploitative working conditions. These brutal material realities are the latest manifestation of a violent colonial and neocolonial history, in which imperial powers have viciously exploited Congolese labor and natural resources at the expense of their political and economic sovereignty.",
