"description": "Our energy system is crushing New Yorkers. Our bills keep getting higher and higher every year – but when heatwaves and storms come and we need power most, our neighbors keep getting left in the dark by ConEd. We can build a better energy system. But corporate utilities like ConEd are standing in the way. We need to wake our leaders up to the crisis. So New Yorkers are standing up to demand accountability. On October 6th, the Public Power New York coalition is bringing ConEd customers together in Bed Stuy, Brooklyn for New York’s first ever Utility Ripoff Hearing. This first-of-its-kind event will: Invite ConEd customers to describe how they’ve suffered the consequences of ConEd’s high energy prices and blackouts. Invite elected officials, policymakers and organizers to outline why our energy system is failing New Yorkers (hint: corporate greed) and hear how we can build a better one (hint: with public power). Offer safety tips and help New Yorkers sign up for programs that can save money Our leaders need to know that these failures aren’t inevitable: they’re the result of a political choice to let private corporations run our public goods. Public power is the answer, while taxing the rich and making polluters pay for the crisis they created. Shifting to a publicly-owned and accountable energy system is widely popular – and it’s what we need to build an affordable, reliable, and sustainably-powered energy system.",
