"description": "November 20 marks 30 years since the Shoshone-Bannock Tribe petitioned to list the Pacific Northwest's keystone species under protection on the Endangered Species Act (ESA). After three decades of failed recovery attempts costing billions of dollars, wild Columbia River Basin salmon are closer than ever to extinction. Come join a vigil to highlight the plight of critically endangered salmon by calling on elected leaders for urgent action; salmon extinction is not an option. The loss of wild salmon is an existential threat to Indigenous peoples, fisheries, economies, and communities throughout the Northwest. The 30 years of relentless keystone species decline also jeopardizes 130 other fish and wildlife populations - including the Southern Resident orca that rely on Chinook salmon as a primary food. This year, Northwest public officials are finally engaged in a joint federal-state process with a goal of determining the best path forward for the Columbia River Basin. But time is of the essence, no more kicking the can down the road. Join friends, neighbors, and fellow Northwesterners to honor the salmon, highlight their plight, and let all leaders know it's time to step up to honor the social and environmental justice for which they are responsible. ** Gathering is rain or shine and will include a slow walk and engaging community outreach. Bring warm rain gear and comfortable shoes. *",
