"description": "Birmingham friends of the Earth are asking candidates for the elections of May 7th 2026 to commit to a list of actions that will help solve the issues the city cares most about. We would demand that any new and current green spaces be pesticide free. Our green spaces need to be free of harmful chemicals, that not only decrease biodiversity of our local areas but also pose as a threat to our health and our pets. Access to green spaces needs to be improved so that everyone in the city reaches the baseline of access (which is that people should be no more than a 5 min walk from 0.5Ha of green space) set by WHO. Currently, 23% of the city do not have this. Work with education providers to prioritise courses that support the growth of a Net Zero economy, and ensure the learner to earner pathway is well supported . Provide support for local business and 3rd sector organisations to provide young people with work experience opportunities. We would ask that you commit to re-introduce the collection of dry recycling from all households, with separate food waste and garden waste collections, involving citizens in making the changes. This should the support the planned closure of the Council's Tyseley incinerator, which is the biggest single emitter of greenhouse gases in the city. Curb traffic levels near schools so as to improve local air quality and keep our children safe. Invest in more active transport infrastructure, prioritising development in the most deprived wards. Ensure that these routes are safe and accessible. Where possible, separate them from the road or decrease the speed limit on the road. This is Birmingham's Charter of Hope. If you are a candidate in the upcoming elections, then sign this form. If you are not a candidate in the upcoming elections, share this form with the candidates for your ward or head to our website to see how you can get involved!",
